7 signs your air ducts may need cleaning

Duct cleaning is not something every home needs on a schedule. The EPA suggests considering it in specific situations, such as visible mold growth, signs of pests, or ducts clogged with dust and debris. Here is what to check at home.
- Buildup you can see. Take off a vent cover and shine a flashlight inside. A light film is normal. Thick, clumpy dust is not.
- Debris blowing out of vents. If bits of dust or debris come out when the system starts, have it checked.
- Signs of pests. Droppings, nesting material or insects in or near a duct call for action. Deal with the pests first.
- You just finished a remodel. Drywall dust travels easily into open vents.
- Pet hair at the return grilles. Hair on the grille usually means more is inside the return.
- You moved in and have no history. An inspection tells you where you stand.
- Weak airflow in some rooms. This can point to a duct that is loose or crushed, so it may need repair instead of cleaning.
When cleaning will not solve it
If your home is dusty but the ducts look fine, the dust may be coming from everyday activity or from gaps in your return ducts. A better filter and sealing leaks may do more. Rust and water marks point to a moisture issue that should be found and fixed first.
